Distraught woman crashes car into Pickering garage, sets house ablaze

A woman faces charges after a car was intentionally driven into a Pickering house and set ablaze — a bizarre incident that destroyed the home and was caught on video.

Adam West was doing a kitchen reno at a house down the street with his partner, Anthony Colasuonno, when he spotted a blue Toyota ramming a garage door at 123 Secord St. — northwest of Altona Rd. and Sheppard Ave. — shortly before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The contractor hit record on his cellphone in time to capture the car as it barrelled back up the driveway into the double-car garage and smashed into a brick wall.

West and Colasuonno headed down the street to check on the driver.

One man standing on the driveway is heard talking on his phone to a 911 operator on speaker two minutes into the video — posted on YouTube and viewed more than 45,000 times by Wednesday afternoon.

Another man was in the garage attempting to talk to the driver, but he suddenly bolted out shouting, "She's setting it on fire!"

West then cautiously entered the garage, stepping over debris and kids' toys.

"You gotta get out, please," West says as he tries to open the locked driver's door.

The woman can be seen holding something on fire — possibly a Tim Hortons cup —and placing the flaming object on the passenger's seat.

West exits the garage and tells bystanders, "she's lighting her f—— car on fire."

"The look on her face when she looked at me, there was nothing left," he told reporters Wednesday, explaining he backed off because he felt the situation was too dangerous.

"We were just trying to help," West said.

Colasuonno and another man tried pleading with the woman to come out and when she finally exited the car, she began tossing debris inside to feed the flames.

"She was trying to make the fire bigger," Colasuonno said Wednesday. "You don't know what's going on in her mind but she was setting the whole place ablaze."

He and the other man grabbed the woman and pulled her away from the garage as she screamed.

But the woman slipped away from their grasp, attempted to return to the burning garage, then entered a side door of the home that leads to the basement.

Selina Bahta and her mom Askalu Tafere, who live next door, were stunned by how fast the fire spread.

"We all kind of wanted to get away because we thought the car was going to blow up," Bahta said Wednesday. "It's shocking."

The two-storey house was quickly engulfed in flames but firefighters arrived soon after and extinguished the blaze.

Durham Regional Police say a suspect was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and no one was injured in the residence.

Neighbours said the family that lives in the home is away on vacation in Pakistan and the suspect may be a tenant who lives in a basement apartment.

A Pickering woman, 37, is charged with arson — damage to property, dangerous operation of a conveyance, mischief/damage property over $5000, and mischief to property endangering life.
